A free one-hour dikir barat workshop at the Esplanade Black Room, with Malaysia's Mohd Suhaimi Ibrahim on the tukang karut's improvised verses.
Dikir barat hands its quickest mind a specific job: the tukang karut, the performer who spins improvised verses while the rest of the troupe keeps things moving. Mohd Suhaimi Ibrahim, over from Malaysia, leads an hour on how those verses actually get built — interactive exercises and live improvisation rather than a sit-and-listen session, covering how an idea is shaped into a performance, and where humour, storytelling and social commentary sit in the tradition.
It runs Sat 31 Oct 2026, 2pm to 3pm, in the Esplanade Black Room at 1 Esplanade Drive, and entry is free. The session is conducted in Malay, admission is from age 6, and the whole thing wraps in an hour. Presented by Norazam Hakub (Andika Kencana) and the Singapore Dikir Barat Federation, in collaboration with Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay.
