Short verses about how to live, taken off the page and onto the stage in bharatanatyam. இன்று புதிதாய் பிறந்தோம் Today We Are Born Anew works from Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyaar's Puthiya Aathichudi — a set of brief moral and philosophical sayings meant as a guide to ethical living and social progress — and applies them to present-day life. Dance, poetry, music and narration carry the verses, and the questions it puts to the room are the uncomfortable sort. What do you fear, what do you cling to, what have you accepted without ever questioning it, and what might need to change.
It plays Friday 27 Nov at 8pm, and the run closes the following night, Sat 28 Nov, at 9.15pm. Tickets are S$38 for a 1h 15min show at the Esplanade Theatre Studio on Esplanade Drive. The production is in Tamil with English surtitles, and admission is from age six.
