Dikir barat meets theatre: a young Singaporean weighs heritage against the pay cheque, in Malay with English surtitles at Victoria Theatre.
Singapore Writers Festival 2026 presents Firasat: Sebuah Pementasan Dikir at Victoria Theatre on Friday 20 Nov — a theatre production built on dikir barat, rhythmic chanting and physical movement included. At its centre is a young Singaporean pulled two ways: attachment to heritage on one side, the push for financial stability on the other, with the whole thing framed around firasat, that gut instinct you can't quite explain.
It is performed in Malay with English surtitles, so you can follow the text even if your Malay is rusty. The show runs 8pm to 9.30pm, done and dusted in 90 minutes. One for anyone who likes a bit of beat under their theatre, or who has ever had to defend a life choice to the people who raised them.
