Writers Ganga Baskaran and Hemalatha walk you through Little India's murals — and the street tailors, parrot astrologers and dhobis behind them.
Little India's walls carry a fair bit of history, and two writers are reading it aloud. Ganga Baskaran and Hemalatha lead this literary walk past several murals in the neighbourhood, unpacking the past, cultural and community stories painted onto them — including the street tailors, parrot astrologers and dhobis who once worked these streets. The thread running through it all is movement: how people coming and going, working and living side by side, made the area what it is. It's part of Singapore Writers Festival 2026, so expect the discussion to keep pace with the walking.
The session runs Sat 14 Nov 2026, 2pm to 4pm, meeting at Little India MRT on Race Course Road — two hours on foot, so wear something you can clock a couple of hours in. Come for the murals, stay for the bits of neighbourhood lore you'd walk straight past on your own. Best suited to anyone who likes their history attached to an actual place, and who'd rather hear it from the people who wrote about it.
