How to Book a BBQ Pit in Singapore: Park Pits, HDB Pits and the Year-End Rush
Sea breeze, chicken wings and one sooty grill: here is how to actually get a BBQ pit in Singapore, from NParks beach parks to the one downstairs.

A beach BBQ is peak Singapore weekend. Someone brings too many chicken wings, the kids run off to the sand, and an uncle insists he knows how to light charcoal. But the part that trips people up happens weeks before: getting the pit. Here is the one thing to remember. NParks park pits open for booking up to two months ahead, first come, first served, and each NRIC can hold only one pit at a time. So for a popular date, the person with the fastest thumbs on booking day wins, and everyone else plans a picnic lah.
Park pit or HDB pit? Know which one you want
There are two very different worlds. The big one is the NParks park pits. AXS says there are over 100 bookable pits across seven parks. Six of them are booked through AXS: Changi Beach Park, East Coast Park, Labrador Nature Reserve, Pasir Ris Park, Sembawang Park and West Coast Park. The seventh, Jurong Lake Gardens, is booked separately through the venue's managing agent by email, not through AXS. The contact is on the NParks barbecuing page.
The other world is the neighbourhood pit downstairs in an HDB estate. These are not run by NParks. Booking is handled locally, usually by the Residents' Network or Residents' Committee for your zone, and many are open only to residents of that estate. More on that below.
How to book an NParks park pit, step by step
You can book three ways: at a physical AXS Station, online through AXS e-Station, or on the AXS m-Station app. NParks also lets you apply online with Singpass. The flow is simple:
1. Pick your date and park. Bookings open up to two months ahead and pits go first come, first served.
2. Choose your pit. You can select a specific pit if you have a favourite spot.
3. Pay within 15 minutes. AXS gives you 15 minutes from selecting a pit to finish booking and payment. Have your card or PayLah! ready before you start. A booking fee applies and varies by park; see the NParks barbecuing page for the current rates.
4. Watch your inbox. Online and app bookings get an acknowledgement email; AXS Station bookings get a printed slip. The actual permit is emailed to you 48 hours before your BBQ date.
You do not need to print the permit. Have the email ready on your phone in case someone checks. If you lose it, AXS says you can reprint it at any AXS Station. Full steps are on the AXS NParks BBQ pit help page.
The rules that actually matter on the day
Hours are fixed: 12pm to 10.30pm on your booking date. NParks is blunt about it: the timing cannot be changed. So that 'let's start at 10am' plan is a no.
No refunds, no cancellations. AXS says booking fees are non-refundable, including for rain or if you do not turn up. You get one date change if you ask at least 48 hours before the original date, subject to availability. You cannot switch parks. Permits are non-transferable.
The shelter is not yours. The shelters beside the pits are shared public spaces and are not part of your booking. NParks also does not allow tentage, tables or chairs around the pit, even if it rains.
Keep it simple. No LPG cylinders, portable stoves or generators. No open fires outside the pit. No sound systems. Don't block footpaths, and don't tie banners to trees. Never throw hot charcoal into the bins; let it cool first.
Alcohol. Singapore bans drinking in public places from 10.30pm to 7am. MHA lists holding a valid NParks barbecue permit at the six AXS parks as an exemption. Your pit time ends at 10.30pm anyway, so plan to wind down together.

HDB and estate pits: ask your RN or RC
The pit at the foot of your block is a different game. Town councils such as Bukit Batok say plainly that BBQ pits are managed by the Residents' Network or Residents' Committee, so that is who you contact.
Many RNs and RCs list their pits as bookable items on OnePA. Search your RN or RC name plus 'BBQ pit'. Read each listing carefully, because the rules differ estate by estate. Some are for residents only. Some ask you to walk in to the RN centre with your NRIC instead of booking online. Some say no refunds once paid. Time slots, group size and notice periods vary too.
If your estate is not on OnePA, call your town council or drop by the RC centre. They will point you to the right person.

What to bring (and what people always forget)
Pack charcoal, firelighters and a lighter. Then the things that save the day: tongs, aluminium foil, heat-proof gloves, kitchen roll, wet wipes and big trash bags. Bring a cooler with ice, and more drinking water than you think. Insect repellent is a must near the beach and the mangroves, and a torch helps when it gets dark and the coals are hard to see.
Marinate everything at home and pack it in boxes, so all you do at the pit is grill. Sausages and corn cook fast for hungry kids while the wings take their time. And since you cannot set up your own tables, a picnic mat goes a long way.
When you leave, bag your rubbish and put it in the bins. Let the charcoal cool completely first. NParks asks every group to look after the pit area, so the next group gets it clean.

Picking a park
East Coast Park is the classic: long beach, cycling path, and the easiest place to round up a big group. Pasir Ris Park suits families who want space for kids to run. West Coast Park is handy for westies. Changi Beach Park has that quiet seafront feel with planes overhead. Labrador Nature Reserve and Sembawang Park feel greener and calmer. For the exact pits, use the park finder on the NParks barbecuing page and check the park map before you choose a pit number.
Tip: when you pick a pit, think about the carpark and the toilets. Carrying an icebox 500 metres along the beach is not fun.
The year-end rush: book early, have a plan B
School holidays, Christmas and New Year's Eve are the busiest stretch of the year for park pits. Because bookings open up to two months ahead, late-December dates come into the booking window from late October. Log in to AXS the moment your date opens, with Singpass and payment ready.
Remember the one-pit-per-NRIC rule. If your group wants two dates, a second person has to book the second one. And because there are no refunds for rain, keep an eye on the forecast and use your one date change early if the week looks wet.
If the park pits are gone, try your estate's RN or RC on OnePA, or switch to a daytime picnic in the same park. The sea breeze is still free.
Questions, answered 🤔
How far in advance can I book an NParks BBQ pit?
Up to two months ahead, first come, first served. Book through an AXS Station, AXS e-Station, the AXS m-Station app, or online with Singpass. Each NRIC can hold only one pit booking at a time.
Can I cancel or get a refund for a BBQ pit booking if it rains?
No. AXS says NParks BBQ pit fees are non-refundable, including for rain or unused bookings, and cancellations are not allowed. You can change the date once if you ask at least 48 hours before the original date, subject to availability. You cannot change the park.
What time can I use an NParks BBQ pit?
From 12pm to 10.30pm on your booking date. NParks says this timing cannot be changed.
Can I drink alcohol at a BBQ pit in a park?
Drinking in public places is banned from 10.30pm to 7am. MHA lists a valid NParks barbecue permit at Changi Beach, East Coast, Labrador, Pasir Ris, Sembawang and West Coast parks as an exemption, but pit use ends at 10.30pm anyway.
How do I book a BBQ pit at my HDB block?
HDB estate pits are usually managed by your Residents' Network or Residents' Committee, not NParks. Many list their pits on OnePA; others take walk-in bookings at the RN or RC centre. Rules, eligibility and refunds vary by estate.
