Verdi's Requiem is a big, dramatic work with an odd beginning: it grew out of a plan for a joint funeral mass for Rossini, who died in 1868, a mass that was never carried out as intended. The section Verdi wrote for that abandoned project became the starting point for the Requiem we have now, and the finished work is dedicated to the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. The Singapore Symphony Orchestra performs it at the Esplanade Concert Hall.
