Louise Hegarty and Tan Twan Eng compare notes on what genre lets a writer do with grief, at Victoria Theatre on Sat 21 Nov 2026.
Two novelists take on a question that trips up even seasoned writers: what does a genre allow, and what does it refuse, when the subject is grief? Louise Hegarty wrote Fair Play, a locked-room mystery that takes the form and uses it to carry material well beyond a whodunit. Tan Twan Eng wrote The House of Doors. Between them, an hour of conversation about what the page can hold, part of Singapore Writers Festival 2026.
It runs Sat 21 Nov 2026, 3.30pm to 4.30pm, at Victoria Theatre. One hour, straight through — worth choping a seat if you have read either book, or if you write and keep stalling where the sad parts should go.
