The library's hiding an inventor lab, a dinosaur jigsaw and a tai chi hall this September

Six library programmes that only surfaced in the listings this week — and not a single one needs a reservation for dinner afterwards.

Every September the library system quietly fills its programme rooms with things nobody posts about. This year's haul is unusually good: a tinkering lab for kids, a jigsaw corner to park yourself in, GenAI demos laid out like a provision shop, and a tai chi hall for anyone whose knees have started filing complaints. These are the ones nobody's forwarded you yet.

Spark!Lab™ Exploration: Invent-A-Vehicle is the one that made me sit up. Young inventors aged 7 to 12 can drop by Punggol Library's Spark!Lab on Level 2 from Tue 1 Sep, 10am, and tinker their way through a vehicle build. It's drop-in by design, so you're not locked into a slot if the MRT is being the MRT — rock up, build, leave when the attention span does.

Puzzle It Out! A Jigsaw Puzzle Pop-Up | Choa Chu Kang Library puts a dinosaur on the table and leaves it there. From Tue 1 Sep, 11am, you piece it together at your own pace at Choa Chu Kang Library. No timer, no leaderboard, no one hovering. Good for a slow weekday morning with a kid who needs to sit still, or an adult who needs the same thing.

Can aI Help You? Discover GenAI with Good Help Mart @ Serangoon Library runs from Fri 4 Sep, 11am, as a hands-on GenAI drop-in at Serangoon Library, laid out like a mart so you browse and play rather than sit through a talk. It continues through the month, so you can go when the curiosity hits.

Book Nook | Our Living Library Collective is the niche one. A youth-run reading corner at the National Library Building's Programme Room on Level 7, opening Fri 11 Sep, 10am and running through September, aimed at anyone 18 to 35. If your group chat has quietly become three people sharing memes at 1am, this is where the other kind of people are.

Puzzle It Out! A Jigsaw Puzzle Pop-Up | Clementi Library is a second bite at the same idea, and the better one for variety. From Mon 14 Sep, 9am at Clementi Library, the puzzles are Singapore-themed and it's open to everyone from 7 to 50-plus. Bring the parent, bring the kid, or bring neither — nobody's checking.

Tai Chi For Healthy Longevity is for the adults and seniors who want better balance and strength without a gym membership or a 6am queue. Tue 22 Sep, 2pm, at Geylang East Library's Merpati Hall on Level 3. Low-impact, no lycra required, and it finishes in time for an early dinner in the east.

Silver Explorer Project: Keeping Your Reflexes Agile through Games I TOYLC26 is the sleeper. Six sessions of games plus the SilverPad app at Punggol Library's Programme Room on Level 5, starting Tue 22 Sep, 2.30pm, built to keep reflexes sharp for adults and seniors. Six sessions means a weekly appointment — which, for some people, is half the appeal.

Two September notes worth knowing before you plan: the GenAI sessions at Serangoon and Sembawang are drop-in, so no booking panic, and the jigsaw pop-ups run the month, so a rainy Tuesday is a perfectly valid plan. Pick two, not six. The libraries aren't going anywhere.
