Date Night? Think Outside the Dinner-and-Movie Box
Skip the usual and jio your date to one of these — free jams, culture deep-dives, folk dance, or a chat about free will.
By Onz Editorial · 11 August 2026
Dinner and a movie? Zzz. If you're looking to actually impress (or at least not bore) your date, this week's lineup has something for every kind of couple — the vibe-seekers, the culture nerds, the ones who want to laugh, and even the ones who want to argue about whether free will exists. And bonus: most of them are free or cheap, which means more money for late-night supper after.
Start the week chill with Vibe Coders Jam Session: feat. Base44 on Tue 11 Aug, 6PM — a free jam session where you can bring your instrument or just your ears. It's the kind of low-key, no-pressure vibe that's perfect for a first date or a 'let's try something different' night. Then on Wed 12 Aug, pick your poison: BEYOND MILES CLUB'S LSKD TAKEOVER at Chimi's Especial is free and all about good vibes (and calories, as they say), while Creators.SG Creators Night at Spaceytunes is a free mid-week meetup for creators to network and share ideas — ideal if you and your date are both a little obsessed with content. For laughs, there's the Women-only Improv Night (Taster) at Chapters @ Maxwell, also free — zero experience needed, just quick laughs in the CBD.

If you're more the art-and-history type, Thursday 13 Aug is stacked. At 6PM, head to Esplanade Mall for Spirit of Santal - Folk Dance Workshop and learn the expressive folk dances of Santal culture (price not listed, so just show up). Later at 7PM, Devotion in Splendour: Reading the Dunhuang Cave Temples at the Asian Civilisations Museum is just S$10 — a fascinating evening talk on the artistry and history of these ancient caves. If you want something more social, THURSDAY SOCIAL NIGHT at Stranger Conversations is S$24 and promises a laid-back mixer. And if you're the couple that loves a deep talk over coffee, Is freedom an illusion? at EarlyAfter is S$35 — a thought-provoking evening that'll give you plenty to debate on the MRT ride home. Whatever you pick, your date will definitely have more to talk about than the movie plot.
